A view over Appiano

The barrel in honor of the foundation

This barrel dates back to 1913, carved by the Val Gardena artist Stanislaus Gruber in honour of the foundation in 1907. It has a capacity of 150 hl.  Above: Archangel Michael, patron of the same-named village. Middle from left to right: St. Urban, patron of viticulture in South Tyrol; Majesty Emperor Franz Joseph, Austro-Hungarian monarch; Noah, who took the vine with him into the ark. Below: two winegrowers symbolically shaking hands in a spirit of cooperation.

President Matthias Walcher

This is a tribute to Mr Walcher Matthias, who took over the winery in the difficult year 1936 and was its president for 25 years.

The winetasting

This relief was created by the famous sculptor David Moroder from Val Gardena in 1974 as a tribute to long-standing customer loyalty.  Standing in the middle: winemaker Hans Ebner Sitting from left to right: Accountant Mr. Geier, Mr. Russolo - buyer of the Santa Margherita Winery, Dott. Antonio Carpenné Malvolti - Prosecco producer from Conegliano, President Heinrich Christof, Prof. Italo Cosmo from the University of Bologna - father of modern Italian viticulture.

Marketing in wood

The lower part of this magnificent barrel from 1926 shows on the left side the three gentlemen of the board of directors at that time and on the right side four famous customers from Bolzano (testimonials), whose inns unfortunately no longer exist today. The middle part is dedicated to the work in the vineyard and shows from left to right the winter pruning, the harvest and the vineyard treatment. In the upper part we see Saint Joseph, patron saint of the workers with the baby Jesus.

Historic grape press "Torggl"

Tonneaux cellar

Part of our Pinot Blanc Sanct Valentin is stored here in 500l French oak barrels. Originally the cellar was a concrete barrel covered with glass tiles, formerly used for the alcoholic fermentation of "Vernatsch" wine. In the 1990s the barrel was converted into a tonneaux cellar and a connection to the large barrique cellar was created.

Wall panelling

When the red barrique cellar was renovated in 2007 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the winery, this area was given a unique decorative plaster. Today it plays an important role in creating the wonderful ambience of this cellar. The brilliant reflection comes from the approx. 30,000 bottles, which have been refurbished and integrated into the wall and ceiling coating.

Barrique cellar red wine

This is the main part of the red barrique cellar where the red wines (Lagrein, Cabernet, Merlot) of the Sanct Valentin line are stored. In the rear part of the cellar we mature the prestigious Pinot Noir wines of the Sanct Valentin line and the line The Wine Collection.

Period of use

The barriques and tonneaux barrels for red wine maturation are used for a maximum of 4 years. Every year, about 150 new oak barrels are purchased from 5 different barrel producers. The 4-year-old barrels are sold on to distilleries or other wine producers.

Hortus Conclusus

The Hortus Conclusus (enclosed garden) explains the terroir of our winery: the soils, the cultivation of the plants in the vineyard and the different types of viticulture.

Plant diversity

For centuries the vine has been accompanied by a great variety of plants that grow in the area: pomegranates, olives, figs, peaches and almonds.

Living encyclopaedia

The Hortus Conclusus forms a kind of "living encyclopaedia of wine culture", says Angonese. The architect was inspired by the frescoes in the Torre Aquila of the Castello di Buonconsiglio, which served as an iconographic model.

Time for wine

Wine Time offers its visitors not only the opportunity to learn about, taste or buy the wines of the winery, but also to experience wine with all their senses. Because seeing, smelling and tasting are all part of the complete sensory experience of wine.
