Neptune Fountain

At the corner of Laubengasse is the Neptune Fountain, designed by G. Mayr from Völs and cast by Joachim Reiss. The bronze statue is popularly known as the "Gabelwirt". It was erected in 1777. It is the only monumental fountain in the town. It was erected mainly for hygienic reasons and to supply the townspeople with fresh water.On a marble plinth stands Neptune, cast in bronze, with three dolphins spouting water into the three shell tubs below. Previously, since 1578, the "Narrenhäusl", the pillory for the condemned, stood here, where prisoners were subjected to public ostracism by the townspeople.

Famous Fruit square

The fruit square is located in the centre of Bolzano. Fruit, vegetables and poultry have been sold in this square for over 500 years. The lively fruit market is open every day, except Saturday afternoon and on Sundays and public holidays. If you continue north along Obstplatz, you come to Franziskanergasse. Goethe Street leads in the direction of Dominikanerplatz. The narrow square was created in 1277, when Count Meinhard II had the gates and walls of the town pulled down and the ditches filled in. Since then, this place has been the economic centre of the count's Tyrolean part, while the Kornplatz remained the centre of the bishop's town.
